Project:
John Carroll University Athletic, Wellness & Event Center
University Heights, OH
Description:
125,000 square-foot Athletic, Wellness & Event (AWE) Center. The AWE Center will serve the entire JCU community, including NCAA sanctioned events, athletic training and education, recreation/intramurals and campus community events.
Summary of Services:
- Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing system design.
- Construction Administration and site observation reports.
System Design Highlights:
- HVAC system design consisted of custom-designed air rotation units and air handling units with cooling and heating provided from a dual-temperature two-pipe change-over system with remote air-cooled chillers on the pavilion. Heating was extended from the campus main boiler plant. Locker rooms and athletic training rooms are served by a dedicated outside air system with exhaust air energy recovery.
- Electrical design included new incoming service extended from the Dolan Center for Science and Technology, custom lighting design, site lighting upgrades, a new emergency generator, and a fire alarm system featuring a custom mass-notification interface for the field house utilizing only two line-array speakers.
- Domestic hot water for the facility was extended from an existing domestic hot water heating/storage system on campus.
Unique Project Challenges:
- The air rotation units and air handling systems were designed to achieve a background noise level of RC-35. This was necessary to provide intelligibility for speeches, convocation, and other non-athletic programming.
Square Footage:
125,000 sq. ft.
